Avalanche Activity

Medium-sized and large avalanches are to be expected as a consequence of new snow and strong wind.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from westerly directions, further wind slabs formed in all aspects. The large quantity of fresh snow and the wind slabs can be released easily or naturally. A large number of dry avalanches are to be expected. They can be triggered in the weakly bonded old snow and reach large size. In the typical avalanche paths these can in some cases reach as far as the valley bottom. Even single persons can release avalanches easily. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in all aspects above approximately 2000 m. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for great restraint.

Snowpack Structure

40 to 70 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell in the last three days. The sometimes strong wind has transported some snow. Fresh snow and large quantities of wind-drifted snow of the last few days are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions thus far only a little snow is lying. At low and intermediate altitudes less snow than usual is lying.

Tendency

In these regions the avalanche danger will decrease to level 3 (considerable).
