Avalanche Activity

Weak layers in the old snowpack represent the main danger. In the afternoon the natural activity of moist avalanches will slowly increase.

Even single winter sport participants can release avalanches. In particular on very steep north, northeast and east facing slopes the avalanches can be released in the weakly bonded old snow and reach medium size in isolated cases. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible in isolated cases. Some small and medium-sized natural avalanches are possible. In addition the fresh wind slabs are prone to triggering in isolated cases still. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities up to 10 cm of snow will fall in the next few hours above approximately 2000 m. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to moistening of the snowpack in all aspects below approximately 2400 m. The new snow of last week has settled to a large extent in particular on sunny slopes. The old snowpack remains weakly bonded on shady slopes. The more recent wind slabs are to be found areas not adjacent to ridgelines, this also applies adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas above approximately 2300 m. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be reduced. As a consequence of falling temperatures and partly cloudy skies a crust will form on the surface.

Tendency

The surface of the snowpack will only just freeze and will soften quickly. Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be reduced. The danger of moist avalanches will increase a little during the day.
