Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger, in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. Increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches in the course of the day.

The clearly visible wind slabs of the last few days remain in some cases prone to triggering. They are to be found adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Avalanches can be released by small loads, especially at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. The wind slabs are to be assessed with care and prudence. A clear night will be followed in the early morning by favourable conditions, but the danger of wet avalanches will increase later. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation moist avalanches are possible as the day progresses, in particular medium-sized ones. This applies in particular on very steep sunny slopes especially below approximately 2900 m, as well as on very steep shady slopes below approximately 2400 m.

Snowpack Structure

Especially at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a lot of snow is lying. 20 to 50 cm of snow fell in the last few days above approximately 2300 m. The weather conditions facilitated a gradual settling of the near-surface layers in particular below approximately 2700 m. Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2700 m, in particular on steep sunny slopes. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2400 m. The spring-like weather conditions on Friday will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2900 m.

Tendency

The surface of the snowpack will cool hardly at all during the overcast night. Significant increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches from early morning.
