Avalanche Summary

The snowpack is thin and mostly unsupportable in this zone. If you find a steep slope that supports your weight, that means there is a cohesive slab of snow over weaker snow, and you are in a prime spot for triggering an avalanche. Avoid hard drifts of snow on steep slopes. Also avoid traveling under steep slopes with large, overhanging cornices. If a piece of cornice breaks off, it could trigger a large avalanche on the slope below.
