You can trigger an avalanche where you find cohesive slabs of drifted snow on steep slopes. The most likely places are upper-elevation slopes below ridges, in gullies, and behind convex rollovers. Cracking in the new snow is an indication that you can trigger an avalanche. Expect avalanches to be larger and easier to trigger at the highest elevations.
Some low elevation, sheltered slopes may not refreeze overnight. Avoid steep slopes with unsupportable wet snow. New snow can cap and insulate wet snow below. Dig down and look if you're unsure. Stick to slopes with supportable crusts or dry snow under the most recent snow.
Although unlikely, smaller avalanches and cornice falls onto slopes can trigger avalanches that break on deeper layers. Give overhanging cornices a wide berth, and look for lower angle or wind-sheltered slopes for safer travel.
