You can trigger a small avalanche where you find about a foot of firm, wind-drifted snow on top of older, weak snow. Although any avalanches you trigger will be small, they can still knock you over and take you for a rough, rocky ride. Safer travel options exist by sticking to slopes where the new snow fell on bare ground or where you find less than a foot of loose, unconsolidated new snow.
