Avalanche Summary

You can trigger avalanches that break on weak snow layers buried two to four feet below the snowpack surface. The slides could break much broader than you anticipated. Avoid traveling on steep slopes with wind-drifted snow, areas where the terrain rolls over steeply, or across rocky, uneven terrain to reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche. It might be easier to affect these weak layers in below treeline areas where there is less snow above them, making them easier to impact.
