Pockets of surface slab up to 18 inches in depth persist on steep slopes and could be triggered by the weight of a person. The potential to trigger these slabs will increase as the day warms.

An approaching storm system will bring an increasing chance of light snow to the mountain overnight. Periods of light snowfall are expected on Saturday and into Sunday. This system will favor the northern portion of our forecast region. Total accumulations of three to six inches are likely in the Teton and southern ranges, while areas to the north get four to eight inches. The valleys could get two to four inches. On Saturday mountain temperatures will be in the low 20s. Winds will be west-southwest at at 20 with gusts to 30 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. The new snow and wind will combine to form new soft slabs in leeward avalanche starting zones along the higher ridge lines and will also load existing pockets of surface slab that lie upon buried surface hoar and sun crusts. Humans who venture into steep avalanche starting zones could trigger pockets of slab six to 18 inches in depth.
