Mount Shasta

One will find primarily low avalanche danger out there today. Be mindful if venturing into steep, extreme terrain where a small avalanche could be possible. Late tonight, our next weather system will enter the area, bringing modest precipitation amounts and warm temperatures.

Generally safe avalanche conditions exist. Watch for unstable snow on isolated terrain features in extreme terrain. Yesterday brought 6 to 10 inches of fresh, moist, well bonded snow to the mountain. The day was met with obscured sky, fog, mist, rain, snow and a mixture of the last two. Snow levels lingered near 6,500 feet. Visibility was poor; westerly wind, light.  An outing through below and near treeline terrain could not produce unstable snow. Above treeline terrain was not observed. Prior to the storm, a widespread breakable crust dominated snow surfaces. Said crust is now buried, and the new snow provided nice skiing conditions. Cooler temps last night may have frozen up the wet snow and formed yet another crust for today. It's been one of those years when, if you don't get the powder right away, then you don't get the powder.
