Highlights

Consequential avalanches remain unlikely this morning. However, you can expect avalanche hazard to increase throughout the day and into the evening. Unstable areas of wind-drifted snow will begin to form as new snow and strong winds impact the forecast area. Be particularly cautious in areas adjacent to ridgelines and confined catchment areas such as alpine couloirs and cross-loaded depressions. Monitor snow totals throughout the day today and be ready for changing conditions.

    Expect fresh wind slab development throughout the day as new snow begins to fall across the forecast area. While it is unlikely that fresh slabs will reach concerning size during daylight hours, localized assessments will be crucial today. It will be important to monitor snowfall totals closely and be ready for changing conditions. The first areas to become concerning are likely to be higher elevations near the Sierra crest and in the northern half of the forecast area.  Blowing snow, fresh drifts, and hollow, upside-down feeling snow are clues that indicate the potential for unstable slabs nearby. Be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, mid-slope convex rollovers, and cross-loaded depressions. You can expect the size and distribution of concerning slabs to increase overnight and into tomorrow as precipitation rates increase across the forecast area.

Avalanche Discussion

It’s been a slow start to the winter season here in the Eastern Sierra. As a result, we are still in a situation with consistently low coverage and a focus on variable and challenging surface conditions. While we have all been waiting for new snow, the overall situation is unlikely to change drastically today. Monitor snow accumulations closely if you decide to venture out. Keep in mind that avalanche concerns will increase in size and distribution quickly as new snow is added to the equation. We have a high degree of uncertainty regarding snow totals and timing today. Be ready for conditions to change quickly and for avalanche hazards to rise if snow totals outperform the forecast today.  In addition, previously uncovered obstacles like fallen trees and rocks may become hidden by a light dusting of new snow. Slick surfaces in exposed areas near and above treeline may become more difficult to navigate as modest amounts of new snow create a “dust on crust” senario. Slowing it down and moving with caution while traveling in the backcountry is still advised.
