Snowpack Summary

Up to 10 cm of fresh snow is already covering the last interface, from the beginning of the week, on Friday morning. Another 15 to 25 cm are expected during the day, for a total of 25 to 35 cm of storm snow. This new snow overlies the 20 to 30 cm of low density snow covering the crust.

In areas exposed to the winds, there is a variety of wind-affected surfaces ranging from soft to hard slab, as well as sastrugi and direct exposure of the crust.

Friday: Cloudy. 20 to 30 cm of snow. Winds from the south shifting to south-east, around 50 km/h. Min. -5. Freezing level at valley bottom.

Saturday: Cloudy. Trace of snow. Winds from the north at 50 km/h easing off to 30 km/h at midday. Max. -12

Sunday: Mostly sunny. No precipitation. Winds from 10 to 15 km/h from the north, gusting to 40 km/h. -10C to -15C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Storm slab size and sensitivity to triggering will likely increase through the day.
  • Be careful to keep storm day fever from luring you out into bigger terrain features.
  • Storm slabs in motion may step down to deeper layers resulting in large avalanches.
  • As the storm slab problem gets trickier, the easy solution is to choose more conservative terrain.

Storm Slabs

The potential for propagation within a storm slab is hard to assess. Also, keep in mind that a natural avalanche cycle could very well occur as the precipitation accumulates during the day on Friday.
