Highlights

Wind slabs have formed in several aspects due to snowfall and wind from shifting directions Friday. It is still possible to trigger these, and easier the higher you get in the mountains. The slabs may be deposited on top of small facets, and if they are, avalanches can become bigger and be easier to trigger, both directly and remotely.

There are also persistent weak layers deeper in the snowpack. They are probably hard to trigger by skiers but can be triggered by collapsing cornices and other avalanches. Avalanches on these layers can become big. Keep a good distance from cornices and the runout zones below them.

If it gets sunny, small avalanches can occur in the snow that gets heated for the first time.

Snowpack Structure

Tendency

Wind slabs have formed in several aspects due to snowfall and wind from shifting directions Friday, and new may form during the day in north and west facing slopes. The slabs may be deposited on top of small facets, and if they are, avalanches can become bigger and be easier to trigger, directly or remotely.

There are also persistent weak layers deeper in the snowpack. They are probably hard to trigger by skiers but can be triggered by collapsing cornices or other avalanches. Avalanches on these layers can become big. Keep a good distance from cornices and the runout zones below them.

If it gets sunny, small avalanches can occur on steep sun-facing slopes.
