Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 20 cm of snow fell yesterday in all altitude zones. The strong wind has transported the fresh and old snow. In particular in the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Shady slopes: The snowpack is dry and has a loosely bonded surface. Sunny slopes: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack.

Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches are the main danger. Moist and wet avalanches are possible in the second half of the day.

As a consequence of the strong northwesterly wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. In particular intermediate and high altitudes as well as in places that are protected from the wind: Soft wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in areas close to the tree line. The wind slabs are clearly recognisable. In particular steep sunny slopes and base of rock walls: Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry and moist avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming.
