Avalanche hazard may increase late in the day as snow flurries begin. Expect loose snow avalanches in steep terrain with as little as 5cm of accumulation.

Isolated glide slab avalanches have been observed in the past few days. Pay attention to these unpredictable hazards and minimize your exposure to terrain below them.

Avalanche Summary

On Friday, there were a few loose wet avalanches, up to size 2, from steep terrain in the highway corridor.

There were a few isolated glide slab avalanches this week from steep south facing terrain of Mount Tupper. A size 3 from Tupper Minor on Wednesday, a size 3.5 from Mounds on Tuesday, and a size 2.5 from Lone Pine on Monday.

Snowpack Summary

Incoming new snow will fall on a solid crusts on solar aspects, and 5-10cm of settled old powder on polar aspects.

The mid and lower snowpack is generally strong. However, the basal weakness of rounding facets/decomposing crust can be found near the ground in many locations, and will remain worthy of consideration until the end of the season.

Saturday: Flurries (up to 10cm). Low -11°C, High -7°C. FZL 1200m. Moderate SW wind.

Sunday: Flurries (up to 5cm). Low -12°C, High -8°C. FZL 1200m. Light SW wind.

Problems

Loose Dry

Loose Dry avalanches are the release of dry unconsolidated snow and typically occur within layers of soft snow near the surface of the snowpack. These avalanches start at a point and entrain snow as they move downhill, forming a fan-shaped avalanche. Other names for loose-dry avalanches include point-release avalanches or sluffs.
