Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger. Gradual decrease in danger of moist avalanches as the temperature drops.

More recent wind slabs can still be released in some cases, in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls on very steep slopes. In isolated cases the avalanches are medium-sized. Caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Rocky sunny slopes and base of rock walls: Until the temperature falls individual small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized moist avalanches are possible, especially on extremely steep slopes.

Snowpack Structure

In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2200 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Below approximately 1800 m from a snow sport perspective, insufficient snow is lying. On steep sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m a little snow is lying. The snowpack is not distinctly layered. Shady slopes: The snowpack consists of faceted crystals. The weather conditions gave rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes. Several small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized moist avalanches have been released as a consequence of warming. These meteorological conditions will foster a change towards better conditions on wind-loaded slopes.
