In some localities 40 to 60 cm of snow has fallen since Sunday. The snow sport conditions outside marked and open pistes are to some extent precarious.
The snow sport conditions outside marked and open pistes are to some extent precarious. The various wind slabs have bonded poorly with the old snowpack. The snowpack will become in most cases subject to considerable local variations. The rain gave rise to thorough wetting of the snowpack below approximately 1900 m. Over a wide area new snow is lying on a wet snowpack. As a consequence of solar radiation, the natural avalanche activity will increase. The gliding avalanches can occur in particular in starting zones where no previous releases have taken place.
As a consequence of a strong to storm force wind from southwesterly directions, deep wind slabs formed in the last three days in all aspects. The fresh wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on west to north to east facing aspects. They are lying on soft layers on shady slopes. This applies in particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. New snow is lying on a moist old snowpack. This applies below the tree line. Above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind.
