Highlights

Skiers and riders could trigger slab avalanches on very steep terrain features at the higher elevations and on isolated terrain features at the mid and lower elevations. A thermal inversion exists. Temperatures at 5 am at 10,500 feet are about 15 degrees warmer than they were yesterday morning. Today's sunshine and rising temperatures may increase the avalanche hazard on steep sunlit aspects. Monitor conditions for increasing hazard from this warm up and move off of and out from under steep slopes if warming conditions are significantly impacting the stability of the snowpack. Be aware of overhanging hazards.

    Soft slab avalanches could be triggered by backcountry travelers in steep chutes, and wind loaded avalanche starting zones. These slabs are more likely to be found at the upper elevations where they could have depths of one to three feet. Isolated pockets of slab could be triggered at the mid and low elevations where they could have depths of two feet and one foot respectively. Today's sunshine and rising temperatures are likely to increase the sensitivity of these slabs to human triggers.

Avalanche Discussion

A high-pressure ridge will keep conditions dry. Overnight lows will be below zero in the valleys and in the single digits on the peaks. Daytime highs will rise into the mid-20’s to mid-30’s. Westerly winds will continue to be light.At the higher elevations warmer temperatures and sunshine will be increasing the potential for humans to trigger slab avalanches 1 to 3 feet in depth on steep terrain features. Wet sloughs are also possible on steep sunlit aspects. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be moderate at the higher elevations and low below an elevation of 7,500 feet.
