Snowpack

Snow depths at high altitudes are widely above average, especially in the high Alpine regions, where there is still mostly closed snow cover. Following the very mild weather in recent days and the rain, this is soaked through, and is wet through below around 3200 m.

Precipitation has been falling since Thursday, with very intense precipitation seen at times in Valais and the south on Friday. The snowfall level was initially around 3400 m and fell to around 2800 m during Friday night into Saturday. From Thursday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, a total of 40 to 70 cm of snow fell above approximately 3500 m in Valais, 20 to 40 cm in the eastern Bernese Alps, and 10 to 20 cm elsewhere. Strong winds from the south to the west caused the new snow to drift.

After a break in the precipitation on Saturday morning, more precipitation will fall until midday on Sunday, mainly in the eastern Alps. The snowfall level will drop from 2800 to 2400 m. There will be a moderate easterly wind.

On both days, it will be sunny at first, with cumulus clouds and localised showers or thunderstorms as the day progresses. The snowfall level will increase to between 3200 and 3400 m.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. As a result of solar radiation and warmer daytime temperatures, wet snow slides caused by the new snow and generally by the soaked snowpack are to be expected as the day progresses.
