Regions

Yukon, Tutshi, Wheaton, White Pass East, White Pass West.

Keep an eye on the wind and look for blowing snow at ridge crests. there is lots of unconsolidated snow available for transport. Great riding to be found!

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported recently .

Snowpack Summary

15 to 25cm of low density recent snow exists at all elevations. This recent snow will form new wind slabs in the alpine when the wind picks up. Underneath this low density snow a variety of surfaces can be found like old hard slab, facets and even bare ground.

In the mid pack it could be possible to find a thin layer of facets between old wind slabs. This layer recently produced sudden results in snowpack tests.

The height of the snowpack is variable. In areas lee of the prevailing wind, depths of up to 170cm can be found. At the lower elevation treeline terrain, snow depths decrease and are estimated at 60-90 cm.

Weather Summary

Thursday night

Cloudy with light flurries bringing a few centimeters of new snow. Light south winds at ridge top and a low of -15 at 1500m.

Friday

Stormy with flurries bringing 5 to 10cm of new snow. Moderate southwest winds and a high of -7 at 1500m.

Saturday

A mix of sun and cloud with the possibility of light flurries bringing trace amounts of new snow. Light to moderate southwest winds and a high of -6 at 1500m.

Sunday

Stormy with around 5cm of new snow expected. moderate to strong south winds. Possibility of a temperature inversion with temperatures around 0 at 1500m.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Pay attention to the wind, once it starts to blow fresh sensitive wind slabs are likely to form.
  • Closely monitor how the new snow is bonding to the old surface.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
