West southwest winds began to increase and transport snow into east and northeast terrain yesterday afternoon. Overnight winds reached up to 80 mph in the alpine and strong wind speeds were recorded at stations below treeline. Winds will shift from the west to the northwest over the course of the day giving a wider distribution to the wind slab problem. Plumes of blowing snow yesterday indicate that there is still snow available for transport in windward fetches. The possibility of light snowfall today will give an additional input of snow available for transport. You are most likely to find wind slabs on the leeward sides of ridges, cross-loaded gullies, and downwind of convexities and trees. Pay attention to blowing snow, rounded and textured drifts, and cracking as clues that wind slabs may still be sensitive. Even a relatively small avalanche can have elevated consequences above terrain traps or in complex terrain.
