Highlights
Wet loose avalanches are the primary concern today. Stick to shady slopes or move to lower angled slopes as the day heats up and the snow surface gets wet. Cornices, old wind slabs, and dry loose sluffs are all less likely, but still worth looking out for.

It’s going to be another very warm, sunny day in the mountains.
Wet loose avalanches are the primary concern today. They won’t be too big and are fairly predictable, both in where/when they’ll happen and how they’ll happen. The avalanche danger for wet snow is MODERATE today.
Clear skies overnight mean that there will likely be a thin refrozen crust on the snow surface this morning, but it will break down quickly on sunny slopes as the day heats up. Once the surface snow on a slope is wet more than a few inches deep, you’ve found the conditions for a wet loose slide. Wet loose avalanches are most likely to start near exposed rocks or at your feet as you’re pushing on wet snow. Shadier slopes will have little or no wet snow hazard.
Guides near Cooke City yesterday heard several cornices breaking off (observation). There’s quite a low chance you’d get hit by one of these, but I’d still plan my route to minimize the time spent beneath them, especially during the heat of the day.
The dry snow avalanche danger is LOW today and dry snow avalanches are unlikely. However, there are still some isolated concerns to keep an eye on. Some old wind slabs still haven’t completely stabilized, as shown by small cracking drifts that skiers found in the northern Bridger Range yesterday (observation). The weak faceted snow surface on wind sheltered shady slopes could also make for dry loose sluffs in steep terrain.
Enjoy the sunny weather today and the ability to safely get onto steep slopes as long as you identify and manage the wet snow hazards. Get ready for a mindset shift back to more typical winter concerns by early next week.
