Highlights

LOW Avalanche Danger continues.  Be on the lookout for small isolated wind slab in complex terrain at upper elevations and remain observant  for Loose-Wet slides and unsupportable snow on E-S-W Aspects at mid-lower elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Observations yesterday found isolated cross-loaded wind slab on northerly aspects in alpine terrain. These small panels of wind slab where in itself may not be that hazardous, could provide an unstable surface causing a fall where you may not be able to arrest.  The primary hazard the past 2.5 months in the Eastern Sierra has been one of un-recoverable slides down the mountain on firm and wind sculpted ancient snow surfaces. We have only received 8” of total new snow at snow study sites at 9300ft in 2022, and therefore conditions are firm and rugged. On the positive side, hardened northerly surfaces are beginning to loosen up with spring time temperatures and surface faceting. We have continuously, and still recommended “Bringing the Metal” – (Boot and Ski Crampons, Ice Axe and Helmet) to tackle most objectives in the forecast zone.

Longer days and higher sun angles will affect Easterly aspects with more vigor, so pay attention particularly in shallow areas where bottoming out through unsupportable or thin coverage may be unpleasant. Relatively little snow is left on even sunnier aspects (S-W), so continue to monitor for loosening snow and perhaps more important rock fall.
