Highlights

While triggering an avalanche has become less likely, it will not be impossible today. Be on the lookout for wind-stiffened surface snow on slopes adjacent to ridgelines, in alpine couloirs, and cross-loaded depressions near and above treeline. Localized assessments will be important to help you identify and avoid features of concern.

    Recent wind deposits have been gaining strength, but it remains important for the backcountry enthusiast to continue to evaluate suspect terrain carefully. Wind slabs sensitive to your weight may exist in isolated areas in the forecast region. This is particularly true on unsupported alpine slopes, the side walls of alpine couloirs, and in extreme terrain.  Large drifts, recent cornice growth, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Conduct your own localized assessments and be suspicious of terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, mid-slope convex rollovers, and cross-loaded depressions.

Avalanche Discussion

Our stabilizing trend is expected to continue through the remainder of the work week as we move through a period of high pressure and quiet weather. Over the past week, extreme winds have heavily impacted exposed terrain at higher elevations, compressing surface snow and leaving very little loose snow available for transport. While we do not expect fresh slab development today, it may still be possible to find older, more stubborn wind deposits near and above treeline. Be particularly cautious in high-consequence areas like steep alpine couloirs, confined alpine terrain features, and extreme terrain.

Beyond the concern for small instabilities today, field observations have highlighted challenging and variable surface conditions. Surface crusts of varying thickness should be expected as you head out today.
