Mount Shasta

LOW avalanche danger will continue today with a strengthening snowpack and mild weather. A mix of snow surface conditions at all elevations remain the primary challenge for mountain travelers.

The regional snowpack is strong and consolidated. The avalanche problems of last weekend, as well as the weak graupel layer buried December 9th, have continued to remain dormant. Observations over the past 72 hours have reported no signs of instability or avalanche concerns. Surface hoar, a well known weak layer when buried, is growing in shaded, wind-protected locations. While this is not a concern right now, it could create isolated pockets of avalanche danger if it isn't degraded prior to the next snowfall. For today, the biggest forecast hazard remains the variable snow surface and challenging travel conditions.

Snowmobiling on Mount Shasta: For motorized use via Bunny Flat, please park BELOW the restroom facility and launch from the designated ramp. Boundary markers (orange poles) are up along the Everitt Memorial Highway (EMH) and east Wilderness boundary in the Old Ski Bowl. Snowmobiles are prohibited above (north side) the EMH for 1.25 miles past Bunny Flat and anywhere in the Mount Shasta Wilderness. Know your boundaries. Citations will be issued for all violators.
