Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow require caution.

In all aspects medium-sized and large moist and wet avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming. On wind-loaded slopes the avalanches can penetrate even deep layers and reach quite a large size. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on steep sunny slopes. In the regions exposed to a lot of new snow caution is to be exercised in particular at the base of rock walls and. In addition the fresh wind slabs in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain are capable of being triggered in some locations. Great caution and restraint are recommended. Backcountry tours should be started and concluded early.

Snowpack Structure

A lot of snow has fallen over a wide area. In addition sometimes large wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and generally in the high Alpine regions. New snow and wind slabs are lying mostly on a moist old snowpack. The spring-like weather conditions will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack on steep sunny slopes.
