Avalanche Activity

Backcountry touring calls for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection. Remotely triggered and natural avalanches are possible.

Over a wide area 40 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until the evening. In particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain and on wind-loaded slopes numerous medium-sized and large slab avalanches are possible as a consequence of the strong to storm force northwesterly wind. The snowpack will become unstable over a wide area. The sometimes deep wind slabs of the last two days can be released even by a single winter sport participant in particular on steep shady slopes above approximately 2300 m. The fresh snow and the wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack on wind-protected shady slopes above the tree line. In particular from starting zones at higher altitudes and in steep rocky terrain numerous medium-sized to large loose snow avalanches are possible as a consequence of the new snow. They can be released in the new snow and wind slab layers and can reach as far as the valley bottom.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 30 to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since yesterday. The sometimes storm force wind has transported the new snow significantly. The weather conditions as the day progresses gave rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack in some cases, in particular at intermediate altitudes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is weak in some cases and its surface consists of loosely bonded snow lying on a crust that is strong in many cases. The old snowpack remains generally stable. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will increase. Above approximately 1500 m snow will fall.
