Snowpack

On Thursday, a combination of new snow and wind led to snowdrift accumulations, most of them small. Strong winds will continue to blow at high altitudes in the days ahead, but there is hardly any more snow that can drift.

In the old snowpack near the surface, there are still isolated weak layers, which are prone to triggering, at above approximately 2500 m. The bottom section of the snowpack is generally stable.

Gliding avalanches are still possible. This is mainly the case on east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2600 m and more rarely on north-facing slopes below around 2200 m. These avalanches may be large in regions with a lot of snow.

It will be mostly clear overnight and sunny and mild during the day.

At midday at 2000 m, between +6 °C in the west and south and +3 °C in the east.

Wind

• In the high Alpine regions, there will be strong winds at times, shifting from northerly to northwesterly.
• There will be moderate westerly winds in the north and moderate northerly winds in the south.

Weather review for Friday, 02.02.2024

The precipitation subsided on Thursday evening. On Friday, it was mostly cloudy, with a few snowflakes falling in the east above approximately 1200 m. It was partly sunny in the south.

New snow

Since Thursday morning, the following amounts of new snow have been recorded above approximately 1800 m:

• northern regions of the central and eastern parts of the northern flank of the Alps: 10 to 15 cm;
• rest of the northern flank of the Alps, northern Grisons, Lower Engadine: a few centimetres.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, between +2 °C in the west and south and -2 °C in the east.

Wind

There were moderate and (on the Main Alpine Ridge and partly also elsewhere in the high Alpine regions) strong northwesterly to northerly winds.

Trend until Monday, 05.02.2024

In the mountains it will be mostly sunny and (especially in the south) very mild. There will continue to be strong northwesterly winds at high altitudes, with these only gradually subsiding on Monday.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. Gliding avalanches are still possible.
