Snowpack

In the south, the new and drifted snow from last weekend is increasingly settling and stabilising. Some avalanche-prone locations are still to be found, especially on shady slopes at a distance from ridgelines and protected from the wind. There, some near-surface layers of the snowpack are lying on angular layers in the area of the old snow surface. In addition, this week's mostly small wind slabs are sometimes prone to triggering.

With temperatures warming up significantly, gliding avalanches are increasingly possible. This applies particularly to east-, south- and west-facing slopes below approximately 2600 m and more rarely to north-facing slopes below approximately 2200 m. These avalanches may be large in some cases in regions with a lot of snow. In addition, moist snow slides and avalanches are possible on steep sunny slopes as the day progresses.

Temperatures will rise, reaching +9 °C in the north and +6 °C in the south at midday at 2000 m. The zero-degree level will rise above 3000 m as the day progresses.

Tuesday night into Wednesday was partly clear. During the day, it was mostly sunny in the south. In the north, it was fairly sunny with some cloud, thickest in the Prealps and Lower Engadine.

Temperatures were on the up. At midday at 2000 m, +3 °C in the west, +1 °C in the east and +5 °C in the south.

Wind

There was a weak to moderate westerly wind, moderate to strong at times at high altitudes.

Trend until Saturday, 17.02.2024

On Friday, it will be increasingly cloudy in the north and light precipitation will set in in the afternoon, continuing until Saturday afternoon. The snowfall level will drop from 2400 m on Friday to around 1500 m on Saturday. At high altitudes, 5 to 10 cm of snow is possible, but the precipitation forecast is uncertain. In the south, it will be partly sunny on Friday and fairly sunny on Saturday. The wind will be light to moderate, blowing from the southwest to west on Friday, and from the west to north on Saturday.

The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease on Friday and may increase slightly in the north on Saturday. The danger of wet avalanches will initially remain elevated, as some rain is expected, and will decrease on Saturday. Gliding avalanches are still possible, some of them large.
