You can trigger an avalanche above and near treeline on slopes where slabs of drifted snow sit above weaker layers near the ground. Watch for and avoid wind drifted areas such as steep slopes below ridge crests, sides of gullies, and steep rollovers. You are more likely to trigger an avalanche from thin spots like rock outcroppings and buried trees where the weak layers are closer to the surface, making them easier to impact.
