Highlights

Above an elevation of 8,500 feet, skiers and riders have a chance to trigger isolated pockets of surface slab with depths of six to eighteen inches as well as a slight chance to trigger older and larger slabs where deep instabilities persist in the snowpack. On Friday a snowmobile triggered and outran a large slab avalanche with a forty inch crown on a north facing slope near Grouse mountain. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8500 feet.

    Layers of buried faceted snow persist in the snowpack. Although unlikely, the chance persists for humans to trigger large hard slab avalanches with depths that could reach over three feet upon the deepest of these layers. Areas where these weaknesses may be found are steep avalanche paths that have not seen much traffic throughout the season, particularly those with northerly aspects. Larger triggers such as snowmobiles or groups of skiers may be necessary to initiate failure of these slabs.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A westerly flow at the mid-level of the atmosphere is overrunning a cold north-northeast flow at the lower levels. This scenario will cause areas of low stratus clouds, patchy fog and areas of light snowfall on Sunday. Temperatures will be in the single digits in the morning and rise into the teens and 20s during the day. Winds will be northeast at 5 to 15 miles per hour.The general avalanche hazard is expected to be LOW in the Teton and Greys River/Southwest Trails areas and MODERATE in the Togwotee Pass. Isolated pockets of surface slabs up to a foot in depth could be human triggered in very steep terrain in the Teton and Southwest Trails areas. There is a remote change for snowmobiles to trigger large hard slabs up to three feet deep on very steep northerly aspects in the Togwotee Pass area.
