Weather Synopsis

Great sunshine in the mountains of Vorarlberg from early until late, cloudless skies, only light winds, milder temperatures (zero-degree level above 2000m). From the peaks one gazes down at the haze in the valleys below. At 2000 m: -4 to +2 degrees. Light winds up to high alpine regions.

Tendency

The weather forecast foresees the sunny weather unbroken until Sunday, slowly rising temperatures. Foehn influence starting on Friday will be noticeable, springtime can already be felt. Low avalanche danger in the mornings, slightly increasing danger of wet-snow avalanches during the course of the day.

Avalanche Activity

Quite favorable conditions

Overall quite favorable conditions prevail, avalanche danger is low. Isolated avalanche prone locations occur on shady, steep ridgeline slopes and behind protruberances, and in transitions from shallow to deep snow above 2400 m, particularly in laterally-skied steep terrain, mostly by large additional loading they can trigger locally. Due to daytime warmth and solar radiation, glide-snow avalanches are possible, especially below 2200 m on steep sunny slopes. Zones below glide cracks should be avoided.

Snowpack Structure

Outgoing longwave radiation was good last night, due to cloudless skies. Thus, the south-facing slopes formed a crust capable of bearing loads. On NE/N/NW slopes there is still loose snow. Above 2200m on north-facing slopes the snowpack is expansively metamorphosed (faceted). Near ridges on very steep slopes and in transitions from shallow to deep snow above 2400 m on W/N/E facing slopes there are isolated weak layers embedded inside the snowpack which are prone to triggering. Below 2000 m the snowpack is partially moist, which enhances the gliding movement of the entire snowpack over very steep grass-covered slopes.
