Highlights

Since yesterday’s cold front, at the upper elevations above 9,000 feet, up to 10 inches of new snow has fallen upon a weak layer of surface hoar and old snow facets and crusts. In steep terrain, the new snow may slough off of those old snow surfaces. Shallow pockets of wind slab formed by northerly winds may be triggered by humans in steep avalanche starting zones. These slides could dig down into the older faceted layers. No avalanche hazards are expected in areas where last night's snow fell on bare ground.

    In steep terrain at the higher elevations, soft slab avalanches and loose snow sloughs involving the new snow could be triggered by humans or release naturally on steep slopes. These slides could be 6 to 18 inches deep and may run long distances on slopes with long sustained steep pitches. Small slides can be dangerous above cliffs areas, terrain traps and during early season conditions when the snow cover is shallow.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The snowfall is moving eastward. Another inch or two of snow could fall before sunrise. We will be in-between storm systems on Tuesday. Skies should become partly cloudy. Temperatures will be in the single digits and teens. Winds will be light and back from the northeast to the southwest.The new snow has fallen on slick old snow surfaces and areas of bare ground. On steep slopes the new snow could slide on those old snow surfaces. In the Teton and Greys River forecast zones there were only a few inches of new snow and therefor the general avalanche hazard in those areas will be low. The hazard will be moderate at the higher elevations in the Togwotee Pass area where more new snow fell, and the old snow cover was more extensive. Up there, skiers and riders could trigger loose snow sloughs and pockets of fresh wind slab up to a foot in depth on very steep slopes.
