Highlights

You can trigger a dangerous slab avalanche on steep slopes where thick, cohesive slabs may have formed. These will be larger and easier to initiate at upper elevations. Look for signs of instability. Identify slopes and features to avoid, using cautious decision making to travel safely.

    It will be possible or even likely to trigger large slab avalanches on Wednesday due to new snow and wind. Keep an eye out for signs of instability such as shooting cracks or collapsing of large sections of snow with a person's weight. Look for dense, cohesive slab buildup as you gain elevation. Wind slabs may feel punchy as you travel over them. Other clues that indicate wind has drifted the snow are the presence of drifts and cornices. You are most likey to trigger a wind slab on northwest through southeast aspects above 5,000ft, and on slopes 35 degrees and steeper. These slabs may be thicker in alpine terrain. Conditions may be more dangerous and reactive first thing in the morning than later in the day. 

    Remember, it is still early season and the snowpack is shallow. Consider the consequences of even a small slide, which could result in a rough ride. Obstacles like hidden stumps, rocks, and open water still abound.

Avalanche Discussion

At this point, you may find between 3.5ft to 5ft of snow on the ground in the Steven Pass zone, depending on aspect and elevation. Higher elevation, shaded slopes are generally holding the deepest snowpack. On Tuesday, observers found moist snow surfaces up to 5,200ft. The snowpack was generally stable and the layers well bonded. On Monday, an observer noticed a poor bond between that day's storm snow and the previous surface. He found the new snow to be cracking and even sliding off small test slopes on East aspects of Lichtenberg Mountain. This interface was then only 6" deep, but after Tuesday's storm is likely to be found down at least 12". 

Over the weekend many folks got out and enjoyed the backcountry. Conditions were generally favorable for travel with good stability, soft snow, and decent coverage.
