Olympics

The warm weather over the past week has beaten back snow cover on steeper southerly aspects and at mid-elevations.  Generally safe avalanche conditions are expected but think about early season hazards while traveling in the backcountry Sunday. 

After nearly a week of clear and above freezing temperatures a weak weather system will arrive tonight and have little impact on avalanche conditions.   A mix of surface crusts and wet surface snow will be found in most areas while 4-6" of settled drier snow may still be found on northerly aspects or in cooler shaded valleys.  No new or recent avalanches have been reported.  Take care as you descend in elevation and change onto more southerly aspects, ground hazards that were covered a few weeks ago are starting to poke out. We'll see what the upcoming week brings in terms of new snow and avalanche problems.  

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.  

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
