Highlights

A sketchy mix of hard, icy surfaces and poorly bonded, reactive wind slabs exists in prime avalanche terrain. Long sliding falls on the icy surface and new wind slabs vie for the dubious honor of being at the top of the list of hazards today. If venturing into steep terrain, bring an ice axe and crampons (not just microspikes) in addition to your beacon, shovel and probe. Natural avalanches aren’t likely during daylight hours, but human-triggered avalanches are possible with slabs 1-2’ thick in isolated areas; large enough to bury a person. A dust-on-crust surface exists on all elevations and aspects that aren’t either wind scoured or harboring these wind slabs. Moderate avalanche danger exists but may reach Considerable in the overnight hours when continued wind-loading makes natural avalanches possible.

The Winter Lion Head Route is the most direct route to climb to the summit from Pinkham Notch. The Tuckerman Ravine trail through the Bowl, and the Lion Head Summer Trail are much more exposed and pass through avalanche terrain.

    Wind speed and direction with new snow in the fetch zones are the bullseye data points to consider today. If you seek out new snow to reduce your risk of a long sliding fall, you will increase your exposure to new wind slabs. Though on the smaller side, wind slabs could be large enough to bury you and could easily knock you off your feet, which could be disastrous on this icy bed surface. The recent snowfall was very light density, measuring 4-5% water. This is likely to mean that the new snow will be transported at lower wind speeds than normal and that the new snow at the bottom of the new slab will not carry much weight. The new snow is limited in volume which is keeping the danger rating moderate due to the smaller size of slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

Traveling in the mountains today will be challenging due to a thinly covered, breakable crust in lower elevation or wind sheltered areas and a dense, hard, icy surface in steeper areas more exposed to the wind. Pockets of older, stiff snow packed in by 100 mph west winds on Wednesday currently exist in some sheltered areas but not enough of it is around to allow for travel on foot without crampons. The new snow fall today will not improve skiing conditions much, in fact it will only serve to mask obstacles. The old adage to “ski the conditions, not your calendar” is once again a useful nugget of wisdom. Fat biking on packed trails or ice climbing may be a better option if you have the choice.

 

We just passed through one of the more active periods of snow and avalanche problems that we’ve had for some time, in part due to the absence of a typical January thaw that resets the snowpack. Unfortunately, the freezing rain and warm temperatures on Tuesday locked up the upper snowpack and spoiled everyone's powdery fun on skis in the backcountry. If you shift gears to ice climbing or mountaineering, keep this crust on your radar. It is an unforgiving surface that kills many more people in our range than avalanches. What would ordinarily be a harmless fall on stiff snow on a 30 degree slope has proven to be fatal in these icy conditions where self-arrest techniques simply do not work. Rope-up early and have your gear and technique completely dialed before venturing into the alpine. 

 

You may have noticed that the persistent slab avalanche problem is gone from the avalanche problems. This doesn’t mean that you won’t find faceted snow anymore. In fact, to the contrary, the new ice crust is likely to cause continued temperature and vapor pressure gradients that drive even more faceting. But without a snow load on top, there is no real avalanche problem so it’s off the list. Near crust faceting may be something to look at in the near future but the primary problem will likely be new snow blown into wind slabs which struggle to bond with the freezing rain crust. Our most recent bed surface and weak layer in our largest avalanche paths at middle and upper elevations ran on the smooth, wind-packed layer built by the wind event on January 24th that reached 157 mph on the summit of Washington. Perhaps the recent thaw and subsequent refreeze will change that.
