Avalanche Activity

Moist small and medium sized avalanches are the main danger.

Sunshine and high temperatures gave rise on Wednesday to increasing moistening of the snowpack. On very steep sunny slopes the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent. The prevalence of these will increase as the day progresses. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised in particular in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls. In addition the old wind slabs must be taken into account. As a consequence of warming during the day more moist and wet avalanches are possible, even medium-sized ones. These can in isolated cases be released by small loads.

Snowpack Structure

Slopes, below approximately 2300 m: Towards its surface, the snowpack is moist. The weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. These conditions will foster a gradual weakening of the snowpack in particular on very steep sunny slopes. Weak layers exist in the snowpack on shady slopes.

Tendency

As the temperature drops there will be a decrease in the avalanche danger to level 1 (low) on Friday.
