While the recent storm snow should be stabilizing, we still have high uncertainty regarding deeper weaker layers in the snowpack.  Take time to evaluate the recent snow/old snow interface before committing to large open slopes near and above treeline.  Wet loose avalanches are likely on steep sunny slopes Wednesday.  

Avalanche danger likely peaked Sunday night and early Monday morning during the tail end of the heaviest precipitation and warming.  The Hurricane Ridge area tallied around 30+ of snow above 5000' during the storm cycle that was mostly wrapped up by Tuesday morning.  Mostly sunny skies and cool snow levels should help recent storm layers stabilize further. 

Shallow new wind slabs may have formed below ridgelines.  Any avalanche in the new snow could step down to deeper weaker layers and result in a large avalanche.  We don't know how sensitive persistent weak layers buried above the 1/13 crust remain. This interface is likely 2 or more feet down from the snow surface and may still be reactive to a human's weight or a failed cornice.  These deeper slabs may propagate widely across terrain features. Stay alert to signs of instability such as recent avalanches, shooting cracks, and whumphing collapses.  With a high level of uncertainty,  make conservative terrain choices by steering clear of steep open slopes near and above treeline.

On Wednesday as the sun comes out, expect to see wet loose avalanches on steep sunny slopes.  If the surface snow becomes moist or you start to see rollerballs and pinwheels release naturally, move to shadier aspects or lower angle terrain. 

2020-21 Forecast Schedule: Avalanche danger ratings will be issued for the Olympics every Friday through Sunday and during mid-week holidays. During the week when the Hurricane Ridge road is closed, forecast information will be updated daily to include expected conditions and relevant travel advice under the No Rating label.
