Regions

Chic-Choc Mountains.

The words "spatial variability" describe our forecast area very well at the moment. The best snow seems to be below treeline on the north and east slopes.

Confidence

Moderate

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanche was reported or observed. If you go into the backcountry, thanks for sharing your observations on the Mountain Information Network (MIN).

Snowpack Summary

There seems to be great spatial variability at all elevations, and possibly more snow on the north and east slopes.

Alpine: Based on our observations, the entire alpine appears to be bare of snow except for concavities and depressions.

Tree line: On all slopes, there is wind-affected snow and little snow. On slopes in the northern quadrant, wind-affected snow lies on an interface of the New Year's crust and facets.

Below treeline: Depending on slope and elevation, there is considerable spatial variability. The southern slopes appear to be at a disadvantage. Snowpack height varies between 20 cm and 100 cm.

Weather Summary

Synopsis: We should receive a few flakes on Monday night before an arctic air mass with strong, gusty northwesterly winds settles over the Chic-Chocs for 24 hours.

Sunday evening and night: Clearing overnight. Northwest wind, 30 to 40 km/h. Maximum -15C.

Monday: Clearing midday. Moderate northwest wind, 30 to 40 km/h. Maximum -10C. Minimum -18C. Snow flurries in the evening, accumulating 3 to 5 cm.

Tuesday: Snow ending in the morning. Mostly cloudy. Strong northwesterly winds of 40 to 50 km/h. Cooling during the day to a low of -25C.

Wednesday: Alternating sun and clouds. Moderate south-westerly wind, 20-30 km/h. Maximum -10C.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be cautious of buried obstacles especially below treeline.
  • Expect shallow snow cover that barely covers ground roughness.
