Highlights

Avalanches are unlikely in the majority of terrain today. Exceptions exist in very steep upper-elevation terrain harboring older wind slabs.  While only in isolated areas, these slabs could be up to a foot in depth and large enough to knock you over. This is a more serious problem in terrain where a fall or loss of control has high consequences.

    Isolated wind slabs are becoming more stubborn and harder to trigger. We are three days out from the last snowfall which built slabs up to a foot thick on various aspects from shifting northerly winds. Look for these isolated slabs at the top of steep exposed terrain features like couloirs, ridges and around rocky outcrops. I don’t expect to see shooting cracks but still keep an eye out and look for stiff, rounded pillows. Don’t get caught off guard and knocked off your feet above dangerous terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Wet Loose – With clear skies, warming temperatures, and calm winds, keep an eye out for small, wet loose avalanches starting around rocky outcrops on steep southerly slopes. These should only be a problem if they catch you unaware and knock you over above consequential terrain.

Prior to the snow 3 days ago, cold, dry conditions for 2 weeks created a variety of surface conditions, including near-surface-faceting that has continued to develop and has become over a foot deep in places. If you are skiing on very steep, sheltered, northerly aspects, watch out for sluffing that could be more than expected.
