Highlights

Weak layers persist in the snowpack. In and around very steep terrain, although unlikely, slab avalanches can still be triggered. The chance to trigger a slide will increase today in high south facing terrain where the chance for small wet slide activity will also develop.

    Togwotee is wrought with weakness. Avalanches are unlikely in most terrain however a full green light can not be given as weak snow  layers exist in all avalanche terrain and the slight chance to trigger a large avalanche can not not ruled out. Watch for obvious paths such as the big terrain on lava which may fail if a weak spot on the slope were impacted. If triggered a slab could be hard or soft and have a depth to 3 feet. Evaluate the snowpack and terrain and cautious choices are the safest way to avoid this very low liklihood but high consequence risk. 

Avalanche Discussion

Dry periods promote rapid growth of faceted (weak) snow in the Togwotee area. Although it has been weeks since any reported avalanche activity, the weak layers are prominent. Recent observations indicate both the current stability and the underlying weaknesses.  

This is a time to monitor current snow surfaces and their underlying structure if possible. It is still January and although mountain temperatures are warming during the afternoons and providing for a chance for wet loose activity in south facing terrain, all other terrain is staying cold. These cold temperatures and the effects of clear nights are promoting the surface to facet which will be a problem with future storms.
