Highlights

Fresh snow and moderate wind will build wind slabs today.  Expect wind slabs on slopes lee of the West wind and wherever you see pillows, drifts, or cornices.  If you see the wind depositing snow on a slope or wind-sculpted features choose terrain less than 30 degrees.

Snow and wind are forecasted to arrive in the Elkhorns mid-morning. The arrival of this storm is accompanied by an increase in snow levels.  The combination of these factors will contribute to the formation of new wind slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

Today new slabs will build and snow from the last storm will be redistributed by the wind. Watch for the wind blowing snow as the storm progresses today and avoid the slopes that the snow is landing on if they are steeper than 30 degrees.  Snow Levels are also forecasted to rise as the day goes on, this temperature change could create an "upside down" snow surface, with higher-density snow sitting on lower-density snow. Higher-density snow on top of lower-density snow can also contribute to avalanches.
