Central Cascades

A slow start to the Oregon snow season will result in avalanches being unlikely in the Central Cascades on Saturday. Continuous snow can be found at upper elevations above treeline. Use safe travel techniques if you chose to enter these zones, and stay alert for changing conditions and potential pockets of unstable snow.

Although there are not any true Avalanche Problems worth listing for Saturday, I will give a brief mention here to the potential for loose wet avalanche activity, as temps are forecasted to climb higher than we've seen recently. Solar aspects (W-S-E) is where you would see this, and our solar aspects are unlikely to currently be holding much snow below 8,000 ft. When you consider the cooler temps that exist at higher elevations and the low sun angle this time of year, this problem starts feel unlikely. That being said, if you are to be aware of any potential avalanche problems for the day, this would be the one. If you do happen to notice roller balling and snow penetration above your boot top, understand that this is a good sign to back down and seek lower angle or shaded terrain.
