Highlights

The overall danger rating is CONSIDERABLE today on the Manti Skyline.

Human triggered avalanches are likely today especially in areas where the wind has deposited new snow.

The fresh drifts may be sensitive on their own but the most dangerous situation is in areas where the drifts formed on top of buried weak sugary snow. The stress of a fresh wind drift could cause avalanches that break 2 to 3 feet deep.

    Fresh drifts stressing the old Persistent Weak Layers is the biggest concern today. The new snow isn''t adding a whole lot of weight except in areas where the wind is depositing it. Areas where the drifts are forming on top of a preexisting weak structure are the areas where you are most likely to trigger a deep avalanche today. Places where the snowpack is shallower than about three feet are the weakest areas. So, shallow snowpack areas with fresh wind drifts are what you want to look out for today and avoid. You can tell you are in areas with weak snow if you step off your skis or machine and punch through to the ground. You will feel your track drop through the snow in weak areas.

    The fresh drifts that are forming may be sensitive on their own. These drifts aren't really a huge concern for me today. The biggest problem is where they've formed on top of areas that have old weak sugary snow near the ground as described above. That said, watch for cracking within the new snow in all the areas you travel today.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions: Snowfall started around 4am and there is around 3 inches new as of 6am. Wind has been in the moderate speed category from the west northwest. It certainly has been strong enough to blow the new snow around a bit. Temperatures have been dropping over the last few hours and are around 20˚F.

Mountain Weather: The majority of the snowfall is happening this morning. A few more inches may accumulate. It will taper off but light snowfall is still possible throughout the day without much accumulation. The wind is going to get strong for a little while this morning then gradually slow again. It will be from the northwest. Temperatures will be in the teens today. We'll see continued clouds into Sunday with temperatures in the teens.
