NE winds loaded atypical aspects on Mt Hood since the last storm brought over 2 ft of low-density snow. Firm, dense slabs have created a spooky feel. A natural 1-2 ft wind slab appears to have released post-storm at 5000 ft on an extreme NE aspect. This serves as a reminder that slabs remain reactive at all elevations. Near and above treeline, slabs could be large, consequential on lee (generally westward) aspects. Slab reactivity should gradually decrease due to moderating temperatures, but increasing WSW winds may drift fresh shallow slabs onto more typical aspects by the afternoon. Whether you're dealing with larger slabs on atypical aspects, small slabs in exposed below treeline terrain, or shallow fresher slabs, identify and navigate around wind loaded slopes steeper than 35 degrees. Cracking snow surfaces, textured snow, or slopes that suddenly became well filled in recent days are all orange flags that should steer you away from the problem areas.
