Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: New snow accumulations are not expected to be extensive. The snowpack will slowly become moist leading to wet snow instabilities on all steep slopes below 900 metres. Above 950 metres North-West through North to Easterly aspects will get the deepest new deposits. Sheltered gullies and steep coire rims will be particularly affected. Cornices will be unstable and prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight, the freezing level will start to rise and will be above the summits by early morning then lowering to around 1100 metres in the afternoon. Some light snow showers at first on Thursday night mainly above 700 metres these showers becoming increasing moist, rain is also possibility then sleet and snow again mainly above 950 metres. Winds will strengthen and veer through South ending up Westerly, for the most part of the day strong South-Westerly will prevail. Observed Weather Influences: Today the strong, cold South-Easterly winds of yesterday eased quite considerably to moderate and brief periods of sunshine broke through to give a bright day. The freezing level rose to around 700 metres by midday and it remained dry throughout. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of poorly bonded windslab still persist in many wind sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations are generally on terrain above 850 metres particularly in sheltered gullies and on steep slopes with a North-West to North-East aspect. Fragile cornices also exist above similar areas. Cross loading has affected some other wind sheltered aspects. Wind exposed slopes are firm and often icy with better stability. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
