Avalanche Activity

Considerable avalanche danger will prevail. Wind slabs and wet snow represent the main danger.

Some snow will fall until late morning. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind, sometimes large wind slabs will form. Wind slabs can be released, even by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on steep slopes, as well as in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain also at intermediate altitudes. Avalanches can be released in deeper layers in particular on steep shady slopes. Medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural moist avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation, in particular in case of releases originating from steep sunny starting zones that have retained the snow thus far. The avalanche prone locations are sometimes covered with new snow difficult to recognise. Careful route selection and spacing between individuals are recommended.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall until late morning. As a consequence of new snow and a sometimes moderate wind from westerly directions, further wind slabs will form in particular above the tree line. The new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers on wind-protected shady slopes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Isolated avalanche prone weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack in particular on very steep shady slopes.
