Highlights

Increasing wind will cause snow transport and the formation of fresh wind slabs. As there is limited snow available for transport, significant drifting and the formation of large slabs are not expected. Especially in north-facing terrain, pockets of faceted crystals exist high in the snowpack, and where these pockets are present, the risk of triggering avalanches is greatest.

Be cautious in areas where there is locally more snow transport and wind-drifted snow than expected. In these locations, it may also be possible to trigger avalanches in fresh wind slabs.

Be extra alert to the danger of cornice collapses. It is very difficult to predict when cornices will break — keep a safe distance! Cornice failures can trigger large avalanches on deeper weak layers that are otherwise very difficult to affect.

Avalanche Activity

Vindøkning fører til snøtransport og kan danne ferske fokksnøflak. Siden det er lite snø tilgjengelig for transport ventes det ikke signifikant snøtransport og dannelse av store flak. Særlig i nordvendt terreng ligger lommer med kantkorn høyt i snødekket, og der disse lommene med kantkorn finnes, vil risikoen for å løse ut skred være størst.

Vær varsom hvor det lokalt viser seg å være mer snøtransport og fokksnø enn ventet. Her vil det også være mulig å løse ut skred i fersk fokksnø.

Vær ekstra oppmerksom på faren for skavlbrudd. Det er svært vanskelig å forutsi når skavler knekker - hold god avstand! Skavlbrudd kan løse ut store skred på dypere svake lag som ellers er svært vanskelig å påvirke.

Snowpack Structure

Overflaten består av fokksnø av varierende hardhet, vindutsatte formasjoner er avblåst ned på skare. I skjermede formasjoner finnes fortsatt myk og ubunden snø.

Snødekket under ca 600 moh er smelteomvandlet etter tidligere mildvær. Høyt i snødekket i fjellet kan det finnes lommer med kantkorn. Dypere i snødekket lever fortsatt det svake laget fra midten av januar. Dette er riktignok godt beskyttet av overliggende lag. Mest trolig er laget tilstede over ca. 600 moh.
