Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs as the day progresses. Gliding avalanches and moist snow slides in all aspects.

Shady slopes intermediate and high altitudes: Friday: The southerly foehn wind has transported the loosely bonded old snow. By the evening mostly shallow wind slabs will form in particular in gullies and bowls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. Saturday: As a consequence of new snow and a light to moderate southerly wind, further wind slabs will form in the course of the day. The fresh wind slabs are small but prone to triggering. The old wind slabs can still be released in some cases. In isolated cases these are medium-sized. In particular low altitudes: As the moisture increases small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized gliding avalanches and moist snow slides are to be expected. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for meticulous route selection.

Snowpack Structure

Some snow will fall on Saturday in particular in the southern half of Aran. Shady slopes intermediate and high altitudes: The southerly wind will transport the new snow and, in some cases, old snow as well. In its middle, the snowpack is well consolidated. All aspects: The high humditiy will give rise to rapid moistening of the snowpack especially on shady slopes at low altitude. At intermediate altitudes there are 150 to 250 cm of snow, and even more in some localities.

Tendency

On Sunday it will be mostly sunny. The danger of dry avalanches will decrease gradually. The danger of moist avalanches will increase during the day.
