Forecast Snow Stability: There will be a period of wet snow instability in the early part of the night and cornices will be prone to collapse. West through North to East aspects above 1000 metres will be most affected. After this the snowpack will consolidate in the cooler temperatures and stability will improve. Fresh windslab accumulations during the day are not expected to be significant. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: In the early part of the night there will be storm force Southerly winds and heavy rain with the freezing level above the summits. The freezing level will then drop to around 1000 metres and there will be occasional light snow showers and strong South-South-Westerly winds. Observed Weather Influences: Snow in the morning gradually turned more to rain with a drier afternoon following. Gale force Southerly winds. The freezing level rose quickly to above all summits. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of poorly bonded windslab are present mainly on West through North to East aspects above 900 metres. Wet snow instabilities were developing in these areas in the afternoon. Fresh, fragile cornices are present above these aspects. The older snowpack remains firm and stable. Cornice triggered avalanches recorded on a North-West aspect at 1300 metres this morning. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
