In high Alpine regions a considerable avalanche danger will be encountered in some regions.

60 to 100 cm of snow will fall until the afternoon above approximately 3400 m. The large quantity of fresh snow and the deep wind slabs that are being formed by the strong southwesterly wind are prone to triggering. Even single persons can release avalanches, including dangerously large ones. In particular on very steep north and east facing slopes natural avalanches are to be expected. The backcountry touring conditions are unfavourable.

Between approximately 3000 and 3400 m moist snow slides are to be expected.

Snowpack Precipitation is expected which will be intensive in the southern regions and also in the east. The snowfall level will descend in western regions from 3000 down to 2500 m, in the southeastern regions from 3300 down to 2900 m. As a result of strong-velocity southwesterly winds, large-sized snowdrift accumulations are expected to be generated in high alpine regions. Prior to the snowfall there was a cohesive, area-wide old snowpack generally only on glaciated north-facing slopes above 3500 m. In those places more than anywhere else, also medium-sized avalanches and, in major areas of precipitation, even large-sized avalanches will be possible in isolated cases as a consequence of the anticipated fresh snow. Observed weather Weather forecast through Friday, 22.09.2023 Outlook through Sunday, 24.09.2023 Saturday Above 2000 to 2500 m, an additional 5 to 15 cm of snowfall is expected. The danger of dry-snow avalanches will recede only incrementally. In the southern regions and in the Valais there will be bright intervals during the course of the day, with the consequence that increasingly frequent wet-snow avalanches can be expected. Sunday It will be sunny, and the zero-degree level in the western regions will ascend to 4000 m, in the eastern regions to 3500 m. The danger of dry-snow avalanches is expected to decrease, however mountain climbers can still trigger dry-snow slab avalanches, particularly on shady slopes in the high alpine regions. As a result of the higher temperatures and solar radiation, wet-snow and gliding avalanches can be expected at high altitudes and in the high alpine regions. These releases can sweep along persons and force them to take a fall.
